A smoking jacket is a question of clothing, now relatively rare, specially designed for the purpose of smoking tobacco, usually in the form of pipes and cigars. The styles vary: the classic tuxedo is a waist-length velvet jacket and / or silk, with a shawl collar and turn-up cuffs and sleeves button or switch. Usually, they are manufactured in rich countries such as the colors burgundy and bottle green.

Therefore it is become de rigueur for any gentleman to don his account of smoking jacket before lighting his cigar or pipe, usually after dinner. Smoking caps were also sometimes worn for the same reason. In addition to protecting the user against the smell of tobacco, the removal smoker's jacket and coat shirt, tie and jacket with tuxedo would protect all these garments from ash and embers.
The rarity of modern serious and dedicated pipe and cigar smoking as the whims of fashion means that the world today, smoking is a rare, the high cost of quality items also prevents its widespread use. Other than visiting vintage clothing stores, a tuxedo quality (which can and often does, to last a lifetime) would now have to be specially tailored or found on online stores upscale.
In many languages, the term smoking has been adopted as a loanword, but in reference to what the English is known as a tuxedo or dinner jacket in North America. As such, it is a false friend.
The smoking jacket was brought back into consciousness public as the de rigueur attire for evening Hugh Hefner, who was generally considered wearing one during events held in one Mansions of Playboy in the 1960s and 1970s. In fact, an episode of the television series Curb Your Enthusiasm, which features a cameo from the editor entitled "The Smoking Jacket" (episode 46, from the 5th season). It has also been popularized early 1970s because the costume was the third doctor Jon Pertwee in the BBC science fiction TV show Doctor Who.
